Alberta is providing $38.6 million through two community grant programs that help non-profit organizations improve public facilities and deliver local projects.

The funding is included in Budget 2026 and will be distributed through the Community Facility Enhancement Program and the Community Initiatives Program.

The two programs typically support more than 700 projects across Alberta each year, according to the provincial government. Funding recipients from the latest intake are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

The Community Facility Enhancement Program provides matching grants to non-profit organizations working to build, purchase, upgrade or expand public-use facilities.

Eligible projects may include community halls, recreation facilities, playgrounds, cultural centres and other spaces used for public programs and services.

The program has two funding streams. Small grants provide up to $125,000, while large grants range from more than $125,000 to a maximum of $1 million.

Organizations receiving facility grants must contribute funding toward their projects. The province reports every $1 provided through the program attracts an average of $3 from organizations, municipalities, donors and other funding partners.

The Community Initiatives Program supports projects, programs and events that respond to local needs.

Its project-based stream provides grants of up to $75,000 for new community initiatives. A separate stream supports organizational development and collaboration among non-profit groups.

Funding may be used for initiatives related to community services, arts and culture, heritage, recreation and other local priorities.

The grants are available to eligible non-profit organizations, societies, charitable organizations, First Nations and Métis Settlements. Requirements differ by program and applicants must meet provincial eligibility and reporting rules.

Community grant programs can be particularly important in rural Alberta, where local societies and volunteer organizations often own or operate halls, museums, recreation facilities and event spaces.

Smaller communities may also rely on grants to complete repairs and accessibility upgrades that would otherwise place additional pressure on municipal budgets or local fundraising campaigns.

The government has not released a complete list of organizations receiving money from the $38.6-million allocation. Applicants and community groups can check current opportunities and program deadlines through the province’s non-profit funding website.
