Alberta opens $1,000 satellite-internet rebate for rural households

Alberta News

Eligible rural and remote Alberta households can now apply for a one-time rebate of up to $1,000 toward the cost of connecting to high-speed satellite internet.

The Alberta Satellite Rebate Program covers eligible low-Earth-orbit satellite hardware, installation supplies and services and applicable taxes. Monthly internet charges, hardware rental fees, optional Wi-Fi equipment and business connections are excluded.

The province estimates about 10,000 households are outside the reach of current broadband expansion projects. Eligibility is determined using federal broadband mapping and can be checked by entering a street address, legal land description or geographic coordinates on the program page.

The program is intended for homes that do not have access to high-speed ground-based service and are not included in a government-funded expansion project. Both owners and renters may apply, but only one rebate is available for each household.

Applicants must buy eligible equipment from an authorized seller and pay the costs before seeking reimbursement. They can submit an application after their first month of service through a verified Alberta.ca account.

Purchases made from Aug. 11, 2026, through March 31, 2027, may qualify. The application deadline is also March 31, 2027.

The provincial program defines qualifying service as at least 50 megabits per second for downloads and 10 megabits per second for uploads, with latency of no more than 50 milliseconds. The current authorized-seller list identifies Starlink equipment as meeting those requirements and says other suppliers may be added while applications are open.

A household may claim eligible dish and receiver equipment, mounting equipment, cable and installation labour. The program does not reimburse subscription fees, rentals or purchases made for a business.

One verified Alberta.ca account can normally apply for as many as two households. People with more eligible properties can use an appeal process to request additional rebates.

Eligibility is based on the federal National Broadband Map. A resident who believes an address is incorrectly shown as served can appeal by providing evidence from all active internet providers in the area that 50/10 service is not available at the location.

Satellite service is one part of Alberta’s broader broadband strategy. The province says low population density, long distances from core networks and difficult terrain can make fibre or fixed wireless construction impractical in some areas.

The rebate lowers the initial equipment and installation cost, but households remain responsible for monthly service charges and any expenses that the program excludes. Applicants should confirm their address, equipment and receipts meet all rules before making a purchase.

Program details, the eligibility map and the application portal are available on Alberta’s Satellite Rebate Program webpage.
