During the public hearing on the proposed rezoning of the former TD Bank building in Coronation from C-1 to CS, Shauna Lee Thomas of Clearview School Division told council that TD Bank of Canada had offered to sell or donate the building for use as an Outreach School in Coronation.

Thomas said she was unsure why the former bank building had been offered to Clearview School Division.

Several residents spoke during the hearing. Bonnie Danylyshen of Coronation said taxpayers would lose approximately $8,400 annually in tax revenue if the building became tax exempt. Nora Webb said a school did not belong in the downtown area. Janet Zimmer said renovations would likely be required and suggested speed zones may need to be implemented. Pat Watson described the proposal as a step backward.

Council members indicated the concerns raised were not valid grounds for objection to the rezoning application. They noted parking is available behind the building, with additional parking nearby, and that students who travel by school bus are dropped off and picked up at Coronation School. Council also stated downtown businesses could benefit from increased activity and that the loss of tax revenue would be minimal.

Council gave unanimous second reading to the bylaw rezoning the former TD Bank building from C-1 to CS.

Town manager Larry Golby reported the new hot water system for the Coronation Pool has arrived. Weather-related delays over the past two weeks have slowed progress, but concrete was expected to be poured by the end of the week. Due to the delays, the pool's targeted opening date has been pushed back to July 14, 2026.

Council also identified several capital budget priorities, including the purchase of a new Public Works truck, sewer relining, drainage repairs north of the fire station, repairs to the north shower house at the Coronation Dam and the application of calcium to roads near the community hall. Road repairs will be completed as required. Funding for the physician recruitment house will be provided by the town in accordance with its agreement with the physician recruitment board. Council said savings would be sought wherever possible, including removing full insurance coverage from seasonal vehicles. The motion was carried unanimously.

Four tax arrears properties will be offered for sale by public auction on Sept. 15, 2026. Further information is available at the Town Office.

Council heard that Clearview School Division is willing to revise its shared-use agreement to clarify responsibility for damages that occur during shared-use activities.

Coun. Brett Alderdice reported that Paintearth Lodge in Castor is implementing facial-recognition door locks.

Coun. Mark Stannard raised concerns that electric vehicle charging stations in Coronation remain free to use. He said he would like the stations converted to a pay-per-use system and suggested they be removed if that is not possible.

Coun. Ron Checkel reported that an automated external defibrillator system has been installed at Coronation School.
