Alberta RCMP caution against travel on eastern Alberta roads with ongoing road closures – Update 2
Following significant snowfall these past few days, crews worked to clear the roads to allow emergency services to access stranded motorists. Travel was not recommended due to hazardous conditions and multiple collisions as a result of poor weather and roads. While Alberta RCMP may recommend against travel or temporarily restrict access, they do not maintain or clear highways, nor have the authority to close them. Travel advisories issued by police are not issued lightly and are based on real-time safety risks. The public is strongly encouraged to follow them to reduce danger and avoid delays in emergency response.
In these situations, Alberta RCMP is primarily focused on public safety, emergencies and partnering with support agencies. This includes responding to collisions, emergencies and issuing travel advisories or restrictions alongside 511 when conditions may pose a significant risk to the public.
There are a few reminders Alberta RCMP would like to share:
Plan ahead, check Alberta 511 and reschedule trips during severe weather;
Pack emergency preparedness kits, including extra water, food, and blankets;
Ensure your fuel tank is full upon departure;
During severe weather tune in to local radio for most up to date weather reports; and
Follow Alberta RCMP on Facebook RCMPinAlberta, and X @RCMPAlberta for public safety messaging.
During a multitude of public responses, Wood Buffalo RCMP was able to assist a stranded motorist in a medical emergency and provided water and food when and where possible. We are thankful for the combined community efforts to successfully rescue all motorists safely.
