Westlock RCMP say their investigation into a fatal collision in Westlock County has uncovered new details that differ from initial findings released a day earlier.
Officers from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Westlock and Morinville detachments responded Feb. 19 at approximately 7 p.m. to a serious crash near the intersection of Highway 651 and Range Road 11. The collision involved a farm tractor and a small SUV.
In a Feb. 20 release, police stated preliminary information indicated the SUV was travelling eastbound on Highway 651 and appeared to have crossed the centre line, colliding with the raised bucket of a westbound tractor travelling partially on the north shoulder with its lights activated.
At the scene, officers confirmed the 72-year-old male driver and sole occupant of the SUV, a resident of Stony Plain, Alta., was deceased. The 24-year-old male operating the tractor was not injured.
However, in an update issued later, investigators said further examination determined both vehicles were travelling westbound at the time of the collision. Police now report the tractor had its front and rear lights on and was moving westbound in reverse, partially on the north shoulder of Highway 651, when it was struck by the SUV, which was also westbound.
RCMP have not released the name of the deceased. The investigation remains ongoing as officers continue to reconstruct the circumstances leading up to the crash.
Westlock RCMP extended condolences to the family and friends of the deceased. This story will be updated when more information becomes available.
