Hanna sets Nov. 2 municipal by-election

Local News

Hanna council has scheduled a municipal by-election for Monday, Nov. 2 to fill the council seat left vacant by the resignation of Coun. Paul Hunter.

Council approved the election arrangements during its Sept. 8 regular meeting.

Voting will take place at the Hanna Community Centre, 503 5th Avenue West, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Hunter submitted his resignation Aug. 13. Under Alberta’s Municipal Government Act, the town must hold a by-election within 120 days of the vacancy, making Dec. 11 the deadline.

Candidate nomination forms will be accepted at the Town Office, 302 2nd Avenue West, beginning Sept. 14. The nomination period will close at noon Oct. 5.

Council appointed Director of Corporate Services Winona Gutsche as returning officer and Corporate Services Assistant Bonnie Deadlock as substitute returning officer.

Two advance voting sessions will be held in council chambers at the Town Office. The first will take place Tuesday, Oct. 20 from 4 to 7 p.m. The second is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 29 from noon to 3 p.m.

Arrangements will also be available for electors who cannot attend a voting station because of a physical incapacity.

Election officers will be available to attend an eligible voter’s residence between 1 and 5 p.m. on election day. Electors requiring the service must contact the Town Office by 9:30 a.m. Nov. 2.

The service may also be requested by eligible residents of the Hanna Health Centre, Hanna Lodge or another residence who are physically unable to attend the polling station.

If enough candidates are nominated to require a vote, election officers will be hired at a rate of $275 for election day. An additional $30 will be paid to an election officer who assists with a ballot recount, if one is required.
