What started as a market test in a 300-square-foot office has blossomed into one of Stettler’s go-to shops for children’s apparel and gifts. Kidz On The Grow officially opened its storefront in the Stettler Mall on Nov. 4, 2022, but the idea began well before that when owner Tammy and her husband sold a previous business and she went searching for a new venture.

After noticing a gap in the local retail landscape—between low-cost box store basics and high-end boutique prices—Tammy tested the waters with a pop-up offering pre-loved children’s clothing in exchange for cash or store credit. “It exploded,” she said. Within weeks, she expanded into a second space and quickly realized it was time to commit to a full storefront.

The store has since grown into a vibrant mix of quality pre-loved clothing (from preemie to teen-friendly smalls), new apparel and gifts, and locally sourced items. Tammy's own brand, Blueroom Creations, adds sass and personality through custom T-shirts, upcycled denim, and creative designs.

"When I look at new items, I think: Would I buy this? Does it fit the culture here? Is it something people can afford?" she said. Many products come from other Canadian small businesses, including handmade books, bath products and unique toys.

Despite challenges—like reminding customers that yes, there’s something great inside the mall—Tammy has carved out a loyal following. Social media has been a vital, low-cost tool for marketing, alongside word-of-mouth and in-store events. Holidays like Christmas bring special promotions, colouring contests and giveaways. And beyond retail, Kidz On The Grow supports causes close to home, including Music for Mental Health, with portions of store proceeds going directly to the initiative.

Tammy isn’t planning any major changes just yet. “I’m enjoying the adventure,” she said. “I try to live in the moment. When the time comes to retire, I’ll see where the road leads.” For now, Kidz On The Grow continues to evolve, one pair of tiny jeans and a sassy shirt at a time.
