Leduc residents urged to report salespeople who refuse to leave

Alberta News

An increase in complaints about aggressive door-to-door salespeople has prompted Leduc RCMP to remind residents they do not have to open their doors or make purchases under pressure.

Police say residents have reported persistent unwanted sales pitches, high-pressure tactics and individuals refusing to leave properties when asked.

RCMP advise residents to keep their doors secured and request company-issued photo identification before engaging with a salesperson. Credentials should be checked independently before agreeing to a purchase, making a donation or signing documents.

Residents are under no obligation to invite sales representatives into their homes. Police say legitimate businesses should give customers time to research products, check credentials and consider a decision.

RCMP also caution against paying cash upfront, particularly when a salesperson demands an immediate deposit before any work or service begins.

If a salesperson becomes hostile, behaves suspiciously or refuses to leave when directed, residents should stop engaging and call the RCMP non-emergency line at 310-7267. Anyone who feels threatened or unsafe, or believes a crime is in progress, should call 911 immediately.

Suspected fraudulent door-to-door activity can also be reported to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 and Service Alberta Consumer Investigations.

Residents can check whether a direct-selling company is licensed in Alberta by contacting the Service Alberta Consumer Contact Centre at 1-877-427-4088.
