Stettler residents marked Canada Day with a full schedule of community events on July 1, despite wet conditions later in the day that forced some activities indoors.
The day began with a pancake breakfast at the Stettler Community Hall, followed by the annual Canada Day parade through town. The parade route was adjusted this year because of construction on 50th Avenue.
The rain held off and attendance for the annual parade was strong, with many kids scrambling for the never ending candy that was thrown from tractors, firetrucks and floats. Dancing and music was part of some of the floats in the parade and Canada flags decorated most entries.
Family activities continued through the day at the Stettler Recreation Centre and the Stettler Town and Country Museum. Events included free lunch, cookies, bouncy castles, face painting, bingo, button making, games and free museum admission.
The museum also offered activities including a scavenger hunt, mini golf, speeder rides and a paranormal investigation demonstration.
Organizers moved several planned outdoor activities to the recreation centre because of rain, standing water and mosquitoes at West Stettler Park. Evening entertainment was also moved indoors, while fireworks lit up the skies at 11 p.m.
