Coronation town council dealt with a range of development, community support and healthcare matters during its May 11 meeting, including rezoning for a proposed outreach school redevelopment and an update on physician recruitment.
Zacharie Forest of Palliser Regional Services presented plans involving the former TD Bank building in Coronation, which is being repurposed for outreach school redevelopment. Council passed first reading for rezoning the property from C-1 (Central Commercial) to CS (Community Support), as learning institutions are not included under the current zoning designation. A public hearing on the proposed rezoning is scheduled for June 8 at 7 p.m. in council chambers.
Council also discussed requirements under the Municipal Government Act for municipalities to maintain Joint Use Planning Agreements (JUPA) with school districts in areas involving shared resources. Concerns were raised regarding responsibility for damages under such agreements.
The third annual Coronation Rock the Block Party, scheduled for June 24, also received council support. Councillors unanimously approved covering insurance costs for the event, as the town has done in previous years, while recommending the event be added to the town’s support list.
Bell Canada will increase its lot rent to $5,000 annually for five years on the former Dobson property at 4802 Royal Street.
Council also discussed rental arrangements involving Frugal Duchess at 5018 Victoria Avenue. Rent was set at $800 per month, utilities included, pending market fluctuations. Concerns were raised regarding the town effectively subsidizing the organization’s monthly rent while also providing funding support to other groups.
As part of 2026 budget discussions, council indicated it is proposing to hold the line on taxes despite a slight decrease in property values within the town.
An update was also provided on physician recruitment efforts. Council heard that two new doctors are anticipated for the community, with one currently signing a contract and the second awaiting proper documentation.
Larry Golby is expected to provide regular updates on the community’s new pool project at future council meetings.
