In Olds, Alberta a residence at 5222 42 Street is now subject to a 90-day closure ordered by court, beginning midday October 7. The property must be vacated by all individuals including the owner. Ownership access will remain restricted for certain persons throughout the closure, which ends January 5, 2026. Beyond that date, the restrictions imposed by the community safety order will stay active until January 5, 2028.
Under the court order the property will be boarded up, fenced off, and secured with new locks. The SCAN (Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods) unit, in cooperation with the RCMP, will maintain surveillance over the premises while investigations continue.
The decision follows numerous incidents and mounting concerns from the surrounding neighbourhood. From February 2022 to May 2025 the RCMP responded to the address on sixty-five occasions. Between January 2024 and April 2025 search warrants executed at the site led to the recovery of stolen property, illicit drugs, and drug paraphernalia. Complaints about suspected drug dealing and other criminal behaviour persisted throughout the investigation, with observed activity reinforcing those concerns.
The closure illustrates a strategic use of legal instruments to address properties alleged to facilitate criminal operations. Since its creation in 2008, Alberta’s SCAN unit has reviewed more than ten thousand properties and issued over 135 community safety orders. In many cases the situation is resolved through collaboration with property owners, but some require enforcement action.
Authorities stress that illegal behaviour should not take root in neighbourhoods, especially those near community spaces such as playgrounds. With the property now out of operation for the specified duration, local residents can expect relief from the disturbances and risks that had been tolerated until now.
