Single-vehicle collision involving youth hockey team

Athabasca, Alta. - Athabasca RCMP responded to a single-vehicle motor vehicle collision on Highway 2, south of Athabasca, during the early morning hours of Dec. 12, 2025. A coach bus transporting a local Junior A hockey team was travelling southbound when it lost control and entered the West ditch. The occupants of the bus were youths between the ages of 15 and 19.
Several occupants sustained injuries as a result of the collision. Two youths were transported to a hospital in Edmonton for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Others reported minor injuries or soreness and were treated at the scene. No fatalities were reported.
Athabasca RCMP were assisted by County of Athabasca Fire Department, County Peace Officers and Emergency Medical Services.
Road conditions are believed to have been a contributing factor. At the time of the collision, highways in the area were partially snow-covered, with icy conditions, and temperatures were approximately -37 degrees Celsius.
Athabasca RCMP would like to remind motorists to adjust their driving to winter road conditions and to exercise caution during extreme cold and adverse weather.
