Town of Hanna council agrees to sell Main Street property

Local News

The Town of Hanna council agreed to list for sale a lot owned by the municipality that’s located on Main Street. The decision was made at the regular council meeting Oct. 14.

Councillors heard a report from Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Matthew Norburn who noted that staff wished to get direction from councillors about the fate of 111 2 Avenue West, legally described as Portion of Lot 13 and all of Lots 14-15, Block 10, Plan 6133AW, zoned Commercial-1.

“The Town of Hanna is the registered owner of the property located at 111 2 Avenue West (portion of Lot 13 and all of Lots 14–15, Block 10, Plan 6133AW), which is currently zoned C-1,” stated Norburn's memo to council.

“The parcel is presently vacant and no longer serves any operational purpose for the municipality. To facilitate potential redevelopment and increase the local commercial tax base, it is recommended that the parcel be offered for sale.

“The property will be listed for sale through the town’s contracted real estate broker, Hanna Real Estate Centre, at the current assessed value of $26,020.”

During his verbal presentation Norburn confirmed the parcel is located on Main Street and the effort to determine its fate has been hampered slightly by a structure that’s sitting on it. Norburn noted there is a greenhouse located on the property.

The CAO related there was a deadline in place in early Oct. to remove the greenhouse, but the deadline apparently passed with no action and as of the council meeting the greenhouse was still there.

However, the CAO told councillors the Town of Hanna had been assured the greenhouse would be removed the week of Oct. 14.

During discussion it was suggested this topic of discussion wouldn't be presented to councillors until the greenhouse was gone and the parcel empty.

Coun. Angie Warwick stated that there appears to be interest in the market for that lot. “If there’s property in our municipality that could be sold and used I think, you know what, that’s what we do,” said Warwick.

Councillors unanimously approved by resolution to offer for sale through a real estate agent the parcel in question.
