On Sept. 27, 2025, at approximately 10:13 p.m., Westlock RCMP received a call from a victim stating that someone had pointed a firearm at them and shoved them towards their vehicle with it. The victim then fled the scene in his vehicle. A warrant for the firearm was obtained for the associated residence. The suspect was located nearby and arrested after a short foot pursuit. No firearm was found on the suspect and the search warrant was executed at the residence, where drugs were found in plain sight. A trailer on the property was also located and searched, revealing weapons and an individual who was breaching conditions and subsequently arrested.

As a result of the search, the following was seized:

• Crossbow;

• Throwing star;

• Multiple imitation firearms;

• 286g of cocaine;

• 100g of methamphetamine;

• Small quantities of codeine and gabapentin;

• 5200 unstamped cigarettes;

• Drug and drug trafficking paraphernalia;

• $4300 in Canadian currency; and

• Over $5000 of stolen power tools.

As a result of the investigation, 32-year-old Westlock Resident Brandon Kandt, who had originally pointed the firearm, and 33-year-old Fawcett, Alta., resident Mitchell Kemp, who was in the trailer, were arrested;

• Kandt was charged with:

  • Assault with a weapon;

  • Pointing a firearm;

  • Possession of Firearm for dangerous purpose;

  • Used firearm in commission of an offence;

  • Obstruct a Peace Officer;

  • Possession of property obtained by crime (x2);

  • Possession for the purpose of trafficking (x4);

  • Possession of firearm while prohibited (x2);

  • Failure to comply with order; and

  • Possession of unstamped cigarettes.

• Kemp was charged with:

  • Weapon possession contrary to order (x3);

  • Unsafe storage of the firearm;

  • Unauthorized possession of firearm; and

  • Possession of unstamped cigarettes.

Kandt and Kemp were brought before a justice of the peace and remanded into custody. They appeared before the Alberta Court of Justice in Westlock on Oct. 1, 2025.

“The amount of drugs that were seized and removed from the streets, as well as the imitation firearms, is significant” said S/Sgt. Jeff Sehn, Detachment Commander of the Westlock RCMP. “The harm that can be caused by these can’t be overstated. We believe in protecting our community from various forms of danger and harm and will continue to do everything we can in order to fulfil our duty.
