Heavy rain is keeping flood concerns elevated across parts of Alberta as another slow-moving system brings widespread moisture into the province.
Rainfall warnings were in place Sunday, June 28, for several areas, with some regions expected to receive 50 to 80 millimetres of rain by Monday night. A few areas, particularly where thunderstorms develop, could see higher totals.
Environment and Climate Change Canada warned that water could collect on roads and in low-lying areas. The agency also warned of possible washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts, as well as reduced visibility during heavier downpours.
The Weather Network reported the system has been slowed by a blocking weather pattern, which has allowed rain to linger over parts of Alberta instead of moving through quickly. The heaviest rain was expected to shift farther south along the foothills and into southern Alberta through Monday.
Central and southern Alberta were expected to see more rain and non-severe thunderstorms, adding to already wet conditions in many areas. With the ground saturated from repeated rainfall events, even moderate additional rain could raise the risk of localized flooding.
The wet stretch has also pushed Edmonton into record territory. The city had recorded 244 millimetres of rain by June 27, making it the wettest June on record and surpassing the previous June record of 216.5 millimetres set in 1914.
Rain is expected to ease early in the week in some areas, but residents are being urged to monitor local alerts and avoid flooded roads. Fast-moving water can create dangerous conditions for drivers and can damage infrastructure in low-lying areas.
