Alberta celebrates 120 years

The Whistle Stop Café in Mirror hosted a long-weekend celebration to mark the 120th anniversary of Alberta Day, drawing visitors with three days of community events that ran from Saturday, Aug. 30, through Monday, Sept. 1.

The festivities began Saturday with Alberta Loud and Proud, a bike rally that welcomed riders from across the province, including communities such as Acheson, Nisku, Crossfield and Red Deer. Nearly every style of motorcycle was represented, with participants entering in judged categories for best pre- and post-1970s bikes, best customization and best of show.

The rally also featured vendors and organizations, along with merchandise that reflected the strong “Alberta First” theme, including a t-shirt designed by Berta Girl Designs of Rocky Mountain House.

On Sunday, the celebration continued with a pancake breakfast and worship service, followed by live music and guest speakers. Monday brought a car show and shine, a barbecue, more music and another round of speakers. To make the weekend more accessible, the café provided free unserviced RV and tenting space for visitors.

Alberta Day marks the province’s entry into Confederation on Sept. 1, 1905. It was formally recognized as an annual provincial celebration in 2022 to highlight Alberta’s history, culture and contributions to Canada. The first official Alberta Day events were held at the legislature grounds with entertainment and community activities.
