On July 2, 2026 at approximately 7:00 pm, Wood Buffalo RCMP Municipal Traffic Services observed a red Nissan 300ZX travelling at a high rate of speed northbound on Highway 63 near Ruth Lake Lodge north of Fort McMurray. The Nissan was caught on police radar travelling at 182 km/hr in a posted 100 km/hr speed zone. RCMP conducted a traffic stop with the vehicle. The driver is facing charges, was issued several Provincial Violation Notices, including a Summons to appear in court and the vehicle was subsequently towed by RCMP.
A 31-year male resident of Fort McMurray is facing charges under the Traffic Safety Act:
Exceed maximum speed limit
Operate a motor vehicle without subsisting certificate of registration
The driver is set to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice in Fort McMurray on August 28, 2026.
Speeding fines and demerits range in severity.
Exceed speed limit up to 15 km/h over – 2 demerits and up to $164 fine
Exceed speed limit by 16 to 30 km/h – 3 demerits and up to $324 fine
Exceed speed limit by 31 to 50 km/h – 4 demerits and up to $744 fine
A speeding charge in excess of 50 km/hr over the speed limit results in a mandatory court appearance, can lead to high fines and licence suspensions. Speeding fines where workers or emergency responders are present double, up to $1,200. Slow down and move over when passing workers on a roadway.
Wood Buffalo RCMP warns the public against the dangers of speeding “Excessive speeding is a choice. The consequences may not be. A few seconds saved by speeding is never worth a life lost. Slow down and help keep our roads safe for everyone.” says Staff Sergeant Sabrina Clayton, acting Operations Support Officer Wood Buffalo RCMP.
In Alberta, standard speed limits are established for different roadways for the safety of those traveling on them. Slow down. Speed limits save lives. Speeding reduces your reaction time and increases the severity of collisions. Help keep our roads safe by obeying the speed limits and adjusting your speed for road and weather conditions. To avoid speeding, the RCMP recommends giving yourself enough travel time, limiting distractions while driving, and being aware of posted limits, especially in playground and construction zones.
