The Village of Alix is pleased to announce the successful completion of Phase 1 and 2 of the Lake

Dredging Project, a major environmental initiative aimed at improving the overall health and

sustainability of our lake.

Phase 1, completed in Spring 2024 focused on the boat launch and designated swimming areas. This

initial phase removed 10 dry tonnes of organic material, clearing sediment build-up and enhancing

both access and water quality for recreational users.

Phase 2 commenced in May 2025 and involved 39 days of dredging in the central area of the lake. This

more extensive operation removed more then 3,284 dry tonnes (see image below for a visual) of

organic material, significantly reducing nutrient loading and contributing to a healthier ecosystem.

“As a Council one of our priorities is to address the health of our lake,” said Mayor Tim Besuijen.

“Dredging out the organic matter and silt from the selected areas is an important milestone to this goal.

While other lakes have posted warnings for blue green algae, the Alix Lake has been free of algae

blooms for the past two years. Considering the low water levels lately, we are thrilled with this result. If

we can overcome the issues of pumping water from the Red Deer River due to invasive Carp, this

would be another positive step to the health of the lake. The success of this project has been made

possible by the diligent efforts of our Village staff and the unwavering support of our residents.”

This dredging initiative was part of Council’s broader commitment to their environmental vision, water
