Athabasca RCMP advises residents of Calling Lake to shelter in place

Calling Lake, Alta. – Earlier today, Athabasca RCMP received reports of individuals on ATVs with firearms. RCMP responded and located the suspects, who showed their firearms to RCMP officers before fleeing the scene.

 

Athabasca RCMP advises the resident of Calling Lake to shelter in place while RCMP responds and attempts to locate and arrest the suspects. Residents are advised to remain in their homes and not to open their doors to strangers. Should anyone notice any suspicious activity, they are asked to please call police and not to confront or approach the suspects.

 

The public is also asked to please refrain from posting anything regarding police response to social media until the incident is resolved. An update will be sent once more information is available or if the situation changes.

RCMP Major Crimes Unit charge male for Calling Lake murder

 

Calling Lake, Alta. – On Aug. 17, 2025, at 11:10 p.m., Athabasca RCMP responded to a home invasion in Calling Lake, where armed and masked suspects broke into a residence. During the home invasion, 40-year-old Edward Young, was shot and killed.

 

RCMP Major Crimes was called in to assist and took carriage of the investigation. As a result of the investigation, on the evening of Aug. 22, 2025, a male suspect was located and arrested by RCMP at a residence in Calling Lake.  

 

Terris Cardinal (35), a resident of Calling Lake, has been charged with the following:

 

  • Second degree murder;

  • Break and enter;

  • Multiple firearm offences;

  • He was also wanted on a Canada wide warrant.

 

After a Judicial Interim Release Hearing, Cardinal has been remanded into custody and will be appearing in Alberta Court of Justice in Athabasca on Sept. 2, 2025.

Athabasca RCMP request assistance in locating wanted male

 

Calling Lake Alta. – Athabasca RCMP is seeking public assistance in locating a wanted male.

 

Michael Cardinal (32), a resident of Calling Lake, is wanted for firearms related offences as a result of an incident on Bigstone Cree Nation, Calling Lake, on Aug. 20, 2025.

 

Michael is described as:

 

  • Medium complexion

  • Brown eyes and brown hair

  • 6 feet tall and 180 pounds

 

Michael is considered armed and dangerous. Do not approach him.
