Big Valley rodeo honours Devon Boulding

Local News

This year’s Big Valley Bust Out Rodeo, held Friday, July 25, was dedicated to the memory of Devon Boulding — a local rancher remembered for his love of family, horses and faith.

Each year, the community rodeo honours someone who has passed away. In 2024, that person was Boulding, who died May 22 at Heritage House in Stettler, following a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease. He was 69.

Born Jan. 31, 1955, in Red Deer, Boulding grew up on the family ranch near River Glen and was already driving one of the five school buses parked at the home place each night before finishing high school. He later earned a degree in agriculture from the University of Alberta.

A lifelong rancher, Boulding had a passion for horses and cattle. His involvement with the Red Deer Quarter Horse Association led him to meet his wife, Gail, and the two married in 1981.

The couple raised three children — Ashley, Jeffrey and Jeremy — first in Red Deer and then on the Big Valley ranch, where Boulding’s devotion to family was evident. Neighbours often saw him in the pasture, leading a pony with one of his children riding behind.

Life changed after his Parkinson’s diagnosis, but Boulding remained active and determined. He adapted to physical limitations with what his family described as quiet strength — moving from horseback to a quad, a cane, and eventually a wheelchair.

Faith became an anchor in his later years. Even after moving to Heritage House, Boulding stayed connected to ranch life through regular visits and phone calls.

“Parkinson’s doesn’t kill you,” the family said, “but it doesn’t let you live.”

Despite the challenges, he maintained his sense of humour and trademark smile. His last words — asking about the seeding — reflected his enduring love for the land.

Boulding is remembered for his perseverance, gentle spirit and the legacy he leaves behind in the ranching community.

He is deeply missed by family, friends, and all who knew him.
