France broke into nationwide demonstrations on September 10 as protesters mobilized under the banner “Block Everything,” targeting President Emmanuel Macron’s administration amid deepening public frustration over soaring national debt and economic hardship. Roads were blocked, barricades were set alight and skirmishes with police erupted in cities from Paris to Nantes. Authorities dispatched more than 80,000 security personnel to restore order and arrested nearly 300 participants, with about 200 detained in the capital alone.
The unrest follows months of mounting fiscal strain, driven by a public debt burden equal to approximately 114 percent of GDP and a deficit far above the European Union’s 3 percent limit. Earlier this month, lawmakers toppled the government of Prime Minister François Bayrou after rejecting his debt-reduction plan that included 44 billion euros in spending cuts. Macron immediately installed a loyal successor, raising popular ire over continued austerity governance.
Many demonstrators are channeling their anger toward Macron himself, demanding his resignation. Among diverse protest groups—from students to labor organizations—there is a growing conviction that the president has overseen a ruling class that favours the wealthy and neglects ordinary citizens. As the social and political crisis deepens, Macron’s survival in office increasingly hinges on whether he can defuse the economic pressures and restore public trust.
