Calgary officer wounded, suspect dead after traffic stop

Alberta News

A Calgary police officer has been released from hospital after being wounded during a traffic stop that led to a pursuit, a carjacking and gunfire near Edworthy Park.

The suspect was later found dead in the Bow River. The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is investigating the incident, including exchanges of gunfire involving police.

Calgary police said officers stopped a vehicle in the southwest community of Spruce Cliff at about 11:45 a.m. Monday. An occupant of the vehicle opened fire and struck one of the officers.

A man then left the vehicle and ran into Edworthy Park toward the Bow River. Police said he continued firing at pursuing officers and people in the area.

Officers returned fire during the pursuit, police said. A police helicopter was used to track the man and direct officers on the ground.

Police said the man took another vehicle and drove through the park until it became stuck. He then left that vehicle and continued running.

Officers found the man dead in the Bow River before police on the ground reached him. The Calgary Fire Department assisted with the recovery.

Police later said the man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The incident prompted a dangerous-person alert shortly after noon Monday. Residents were told to stay inside and members of the public were asked to avoid Edworthy Park.

Police ended the alert about 50 minutes later after determining there was no longer an active threat.

The wounded officer was initially taken to hospital in stable condition. Calgary police said Tuesday that the officer had been released and was recovering.

Edworthy Park has also reopened.

Police have not publicly identified the officer or the deceased man. Investigators have asked anyone who witnessed the incident or has relevant video to contact Calgary police.

ASIRT investigates incidents involving Alberta police officers that result in serious injury or death. Its investigation will examine the actions of police and the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.
