Canada’s Ag sector reconsiders U.S. reliance

Canadian News

Canada’s agriculture and agri-food sector is reassessing its relationship with the United States as new trade uncertainties reshape market expectations. Findings released by the Angus Reid Institute in partnership with the Canadian Agri-Food Policy Institute show growing unease over how reliant Canadian producers have become on the American market. Close to two-thirds of survey participants said Canada depends too heavily on the U.S., indicating that the current trade balance has left the sector vulnerable to economic and political shifts south of the border.

The report notes that confidence in Canada’s ability to adjust is mixed. Roughly half of respondents believe the country could offset losses by strengthening export ties elsewhere, while a significant portion remains doubtful. Participants pointed to opportunities in Canada’s domestic market, along with prospects in parts of Asia and Europe, as potential areas for growth if trade conditions with the U.S. deteriorate further.

Producers also identified a series of pressures weighing on the sector. Trade barriers and renewed protectionism continue to dominate concerns, coupled with growing anxiety over extreme weather, rising input costs and unstable commodity prices. The survey highlighted a marked increase in apprehension surrounding U.S. political conditions compared with last year, reinforcing fears that cross-border volatility could disrupt long-established supply chains.

Despite this, most respondents expressed cautious optimism for the industry’s long-term outlook. Many see opportunities in expanded domestic processing, improved interprovincial trade and stronger engagement in international markets. According to Angus Reid’s findings, the sector is navigating a pivotal moment, balancing longstanding North American ties with a broadening interest in diversified and resilient trade pathways.
