Cross-border potash moves

Canadian News

Nutrien Ltd., the world’s largest producer of potash fertilizer, has identified Longview, Washington, as its preferred location for a new export terminal to handle increased volumes from its Saskatchewan operations.

The proposed terminal, sited at Berth 4 in Longview, would be built to deep-water specifications and is being positioned to ship millions of tonnes of Canadian-origin potash to global markets, especially in Asia and Latin America.

Nutrien says it evaluated potential sites across the Pacific Northwest against roughly 30 criteria, including rail connectivity, freight costs, labor availability, and construction expenses.

A final investment decision on the project is expected in 2027, and if approved, the terminal could be in full operation by 2031.

The economics of the U.S. site reportedly outperformed Canadian alternatives. According to internal comparisons, the Longview location offered significant cost advantages and logistical efficiencies.

Nutrien says the decision is not political. The company frames it purely as a business judgment: stronger infrastructure on the U.S. side helps make Saskatchewan potash more competitive globally.

The announcement has drawn political attention in Canada. Ottawa has reportedly encouraged Nutrien to consider building the facility in Canada — for example, in Saint John, New Brunswick, or expanding capacity on the West Coast — citing national strategic interests.

Part of the company’s rationale reflects past export challenges. In 2023, Nutrien curtailed production at its Cory mine after a labor strike at the Port of Vancouver disrupted access through a major terminal.

Nutrien says the proposed facility would complement its existing export infrastructure, including terminals in North Vancouver, Saint John and Portland, Oregon.

From Nutrien’s perspective, adding capacity via Longview offers greater supply chain resilience, enabling it to serve growing markets with lower logistical risk.
