World Mental Health Day on Oct. 10 brought renewed attention to mental health in agriculture, including the isolation that can accompany the pressures of running a farm.
The annual observance promotes awareness of mental health issues and support for people who need care. For farmers, those conversations can involve difficulties that are less visible than poor weather or uncertain commodity prices.
Farm stress often begin with weather, crops and prices. Beneath those concerns, however, can be loneliness and repeatedly dwelling on worries.
Farmers are encouraged to develop skills for managing their mental health before difficulties become overwhelming and to reach out when handling problems alone is no longer working.
One option for people seeking connection is AgTalk, an online peer-support community offered through the Do More Agriculture Foundation and powered by Togetherall.
The service allows people aged 16 and older to discuss their experiences anonymously, including loneliness, fears and everyday challenges. It connects participants with others in agriculture within the broader Togetherall community.
According to the foundation, the platform has clinical moderation around the clock and operates in English and French.
For Alberta producers, the online service provides a way to connect with support from their own communities without travelling to an in-person gathering.
Registration and further information are available at domore.ag/agtalk.
