Young aviation enthusiasts took to the skies over east-central Alberta on May 2 as the Iron Creek Flying Club hosted a Discover Aviation Day at the Flagstaff Regional Airport near Killam.
A total of 16 pilots and aircraft participated in the event, which offered free flights to youth between the ages of eight and 17. Flights travelled from Killam to Hardisty and back throughout the morning and early afternoon.
Organizers stated more than 200 children had been flown by 1 p.m., with steady participation from both local families and visitors to the area. The event began at 8 a.m. and was supported by volunteers working on the ground throughout the day.
Club members noted the success of the event depended heavily on volunteer support and the condition of the airport facilities. Organizers credited Flagstaff County for maintaining the Flagstaff Regional Airport in a condition that allowed the large-scale aviation event to operate smoothly.
Cindy Heidecker of Coronation was among those who helped coordinate planning for the day alongside several other volunteers and organizers.
Favourable weather conditions also contributed to the strong turnout, with temperatures near 20 C and light winds creating ideal flying conditions for the event.
Organizers said the annual event continues to provide young people with an opportunity to experience aviation firsthand while bringing communities together around the regional airport.
