Five people were injured after two tornadoes touched down in eastern Alberta on the evening of July 8, leaving a trail of damage near the communities of Edgerton and Dillberry Lake while forcing the evacuation of a provincial campground.
Emergency officials said one tornado struck near Edgerton, where several homes were damaged and five people suffered injuries. The injuries were reported to be non-life-threatening, although the full extent of the property damage is still being assessed.
A second tornado touched down at Dillberry Lake Provincial Campground near the Alberta-Saskatchewan border. Wainwright RCMP, assisted by surrounding detachments and emergency services, evacuated the campground after the tornado moved through the area.
Police confirmed everyone at the campground was safely accounted for following the evacuation, and no injuries were reported at that location.
The storms were part of a widespread severe weather outbreak that swept across east-central Alberta Wednesday evening, producing tornadoes, destructive winds, large hail and heavy rain. Storm chasers documented a large tornado near Dillberry Lake as Environment Canada issued tornado warnings across portions of the region.
RCMP and emergency crews remained on scene Thursday as damage assessments continued. Authorities are asking residents to avoid affected areas unless necessary and to follow the directions of emergency personnel while cleanup efforts continue.
