Central Alberta residents and visitors to the region who planned to enjoy a tourist train in the Camrose area will be disappointed this summer after the attraction’s owner said it’s cancelled for 2026.

The Camrose Chamber of Commerce announced on social media Apr. 8 the Jeppa Train, also known as the Mirror Lake Express, won’t be running this summer for a variety of reasons. “The Camrose & District Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors announces, with sincere regret, that the Jeppa Train (Mirror Lake Express) will not operate,” stated the statement dated Apr. 8 on social media.

“Over the past year, the board, together with dedicated volunteers and community partners, has undertaken extensive efforts to explore options for continuing train operations.

This work has included reviewing operating requirements, assessing operational capacity, and evaluating the significant restoration investment required to ensure the train can operate in a safe and sustainable manner.

“Despite these efforts, the Chamber has determined that it is not feasible to proceed with operations at this time. The Chamber recognizes that this news will be disappointing for many in the community.

“For decades, the Jeppa Train has been a cherished local attraction, creating memorable experiences for families, residents, and visitors alike. Its absence will undoubtedly be felt. The Chamber extends its sincere gratitude to everyone who has contributed their time, knowledge, and passion in support of keeping the train operating.

“While this decision was not made lightly, the Board believes it is the responsible choice given the current circumstances and appreciates the community's understanding and continued support.”

About a year ago, the chamber announced Jeppa’s 2025 season was delayed due to an issue with the train’s brakes.

Camrose & District Chamber of Commerce Board President Jennifer Fossen also posted a social media statement Apr. 8 clarifying the situation. “I want to take a moment to speak directly to our community regarding the Jeppa Train and some of the questions and concerns we’ve been hearing,” stated Fossen’s post.

“First, it’s important to clarify that the Camrose & District Chamber of Commerce is a separate organization from the City of Camrose. We are not part of the City, nor are we governed by it. We are a member-driven, not-for-profit organization made up of local businesses and community members.

Our role is to support and represent our members, and one of the key ways we do that is by advocating on their behalf to all levels of government—local, provincial, and federal. In simple terms, we work to make sure the voices of our business community are heard, while also contributing to a strong, connected, and thriving Camrose.

“At the same time, we want to recognize and thank the City of Camrose for the support they’ve provided over the years. Their partnership has helped make programs like the Jeppa Train possible, and we are truly grateful for that collaboration.

“We also want to acknowledge what the Jeppa Train means to so many people. We hear the disappointment, and we share in it. The train has been a meaningful part of our community—something that connects generations, creates memories, and reflects a piece of our local history and culture.

Right now, no final decisions have been made by the Chamber’s Board of Directors about what comes next for the Jeppa Train.

“We are taking the time to carefully look at options and consider what is possible, keeping the community’s connection to the train front of mind. My own family has enjoyed this train for years, and we too are feeling the sadness of not grabbing ice cream and taking a ride around the lake.

“As a member-based organization, these decisions are not taken lightly. We care deeply about our community and understand how important this is to many of you.”

Social media users offered their advice on how the chamber could keep the train running this summer.

Many users felt the City of Camrose could step in to repair or fund the train. One user commented, “I would think instead of cancelling it, the city could put on a fundraiser as it’s part of Camrose’s history.” Another user commented, “...doesn't matter if the city is separate, I'm sure they can throw some money your way to help.”

A third user suggested the high school help out. “Could the auto mechanic program at the Comp (high school) fix the train? Could it be converted to an EV?” stated the third user.
