Two schools in the Stettler community were on high alert Apr. 16 after a possible threat was made. The school division noted police are talking to someone in relation to the incident.
In a press release Apr. 16, RCMP K Division spokesperson Cpl. Troy Savinkoff stated, “On Apr. 15, 2026, at 10:15 p.m., Stettler RCMP received reports that a youth was sending threats via Snapchat to shoot students at the William E. Hay School in Stettler.
“Officers quickly initiated an investigation and obtained evidence to support an arrest. One youth suspect has been arrested and is in custody with charges pending for uttering threats. The youth will be taken before a Justice of the Peace in order to determine future court dates and determine release status.
“Although RCMP do not believe there is an ongoing risk to students and staff, the Stettler RCMP school resource officer (SRO) and detachment are currently engaged, working with the school and, out of an abundance of caution, will have an ongoing police presence.”
In a statement, Clearview Public Schools Superintendent Scot Leys informed parents, one of whom forwarded the message to the Rural Alberta Report, that a possible threat had been made against a school. “Last night, Clearview Public Schools received information regarding a possible threat involving Wm. E. Hay School for (Apr. 16),” stated Leys in the statement. “The RCMP had also been notified and began investigating the matter last night.
“We have been advised that the individual in question is with the RCMP, while the investigation continues today.
“Out of an abundance of caution, Wm. E. Hay School and Stettler Elementary are on alert today. As part of normal safety procedures, school doors at the Stettler Complex will remain locked throughout the day, and staff will be present at entrances as students enter the building.
“The safety of our students and staff is always our highest priority. Clearview Public Schools takes all potential threats seriously and will continue to work closely with the RCMP and our partners to help ensure students remain safe at school. Thank you for your understanding and support.”
The Rural Alberta Report has reached out to Clearview Public Schools to confirm these details.
Readers unfamiliar with the Stettler community should note the two schools in question are located immediately adjacent to each other.
Correction notice: Threats were received on April 15 and the schools were not locked down but rather on high alert.
