Aug. 20, 2026: An off-duty RCMP officer has been charged with four offences following an investigation into allegations of intimate partner violence in Blackfalds.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team was directed July 9 to investigate the allegations.
ASIRT said the evidence gathered during the investigation provided reasonable grounds to believe an offence had occurred. Executive director Matthew Block subsequently determined that charges should be laid.
The officer was arrested Aug. 18 and charged with assault, uttering threats, unlawful confinement and intimidation.
The officer was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to make a first court appearance Sept. 24 in Alberta Court of Justice in Red Deer.
The officer has not been publicly identified.
The Police Review Commission said withholding the name is an exception to ASIRT’s usual practice of identifying police officers charged with criminal offences. The decision was made to protect the privacy of the alleged victim and avoid information that could reveal the person’s identity.
ASIRT said no further information will be released while the case is before the courts.
Questions about the officer’s employment status have been referred to the RCMP.
ASIRT operates within the Police Review Commission, an independent civilian-led agency responsible for investigating potential criminal offences involving police officers in Alberta.
The charges have not been proven in court.
