Prairie wheat prices slip as U.S. futures drop and weather shifts

Alberta News

Western Canadian wheat cash prices edged lower for the week ending July 10, reflecting pressure from declining U.S. futures and mixed Prairie weather. According to data compiled by Price and Data Quotes (PDQ), Canadian Western Red Spring (CWRS) wheat lost between C$6.10 and C$11.40 per tonne, with delivery bids ranging from about C$279.70 on the Saskatchewan–Manitoba border to C$305.20 in southern Alberta.

A stronger Canadian dollar, which eased to 73.08 U.S. cents on July 10, layered extra downward force on Canadian prices when converted to U.S.-dollar terms.  Quoted basis levels—representing the difference between local bids and U.S. futures—spanned a wide C$47 to C$73+ per tonne range, driven by regional shifts in U.S. futures markets and variable currency exchange rates.

Weather reports showed a mixed moisture picture across the Prairies. Manitoba saw up to 72 mm of rainfall over the week, while much of Saskatchewan faced topsoil moisture shortage, with 45 per cent of fields rated “short” or “very short.” Forecasts suggest hot and unstable conditions across central regions.

U.S. Department of Agriculture ratings for U.S. wheat also weighed on futures. As of July 10, spring wheat was rated just 50 per cent “good to excellent”—a 10‑year low—while winter wheat harvest lagged slightly behind the five‑year average at 53 per cent complete.  The Minneapolis September spring-wheat contract closed at US$6.3175 per bushel, down 15.5 cents, and the Kansas City contract slid 12.75 cents to US$5.2325.
