Two separate assaults involving female youths in Red Deer over the span of one week have left victims with serious injuries and prompted ongoing investigations by RCMP.
In the first incident, Red Deer RCMP responded to multiple 911 calls shortly before 1 a.m. on May 4 in the Oriole Park area after reports of gunshots and a female screaming for help.
Officers located a 15-year-old girl who had been severely assaulted. Police said the victim suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.
Red Deer RCMP General Duty members, along with the General Investigative Section, Police Dog Services and the Forensic Identification Section, investigated the incident and arrested three youth suspects a short time later.
A 15-year-old male was charged with robbery, aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and failing to comply with a release order. A 14-year-old male and a 15-year-old female were each charged with aggravated assault.
Following judicial interim release hearings, the 14-year-old male and 15-year-old female were released with conditions and are scheduled to appear in Alberta Court of Justice in Red Deer on May 28. The 15-year-old male was remanded into custody and appeared in court May 7.
Under provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, the identities of the accused and victim cannot be released.
A second assault involving a female youth was reported May 11 in the Lancaster Meadows area of Red Deer.
RCMP said officers were called at about 2:21 p.m. after receiving reports that a female youth had been assaulted in a field before being brought to the Collicut Centre for assistance.
The victim was taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
That incident remains under investigation by Red Deer RCMP General Duty members with assistance from the General Investigative Section.
Police are asking witnesses or anyone with video footage connected to the May 11 assault to contact Red Deer RCMP at 403-406-2200 or submit anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers.
