Richmound reels after cult fallout

Canadian News

Months after the self-proclaimed “Queen of Canada,” Romana Didulo, and her followers were removed from a former school in Richmound, Saskatchewan, the village continues to feel the effects of what some residents describe as a long, unnerving chapter in their lives. Despite the cult’s departure, fear still permeates the community, and residents are urging the provincial government to step in and help repair the damage.

The building once occupied by Didulo’s group was declared unsafe by the Saskatchewan Health Authority after a search by law enforcement. Officials cited serious health risks, noting the structure was not tied into the municipal sewage system. The group leader, property owner Ricky Manz, and others were arrested during the raid, and some were later rearrested for breaching court-ordered conditions.

Richmound’s mayor has warned that the cost of recovering from the group’s occupation far exceeds the small village’s capacity. Local officials and community members say they have spent thousands on legal challenges, public safety, and municipal staffing after councillors and other town employees resigned because of harassment and intimidation.

In addition to financial strain, there is concern over the long-term social impact. Harassment and threats reportedly began soon after the group’s arrival, leaving some villagers wary of voicing their fears publicly. The tense atmosphere pushed the municipal office to restrict its hours, moving to an “appointment-only” model in response to what officials described as intimidation.

Community members, supported by provincial opposition leaders, have called for a more robust response from the government — not simply technical advice, but financial support to cover cleanup, legal fees, and other expenses that have burdened the village. Many say that without external help, Richmound risks being left to deal with the physical and emotional fallout of the occupation on its own.
