Sundre RCMP issue shelter in place for town and place schools in lockdown

Sundre, Alta. – On Sept. 26, 2025, at 7:28 a.m., Sundre RCMP was dispatched to a 911 report of a male walking near a local school with a loaded 12-gauge shotgun. As a result, the local schools were placed in lockdown and a shelter in place was issued.
RCMP from Sundre, Didsbury and Olds all responded to the call, with assistance from Police Dog Services. RCMP received a tip as to where the suspect was and set up containment at a residence on 4 Street while members attempted to search for and make contact with the alleged suspect.
At approximately 9:15 a.m., the suspect exited a residence on 4th Street and surrendered to officers. A warrant was obtained for the residence, resulting in the seizure of:
4 firearms located in a safe;
1 unsecured loaded shotgun;
Drug trafficking paraphernalia; and
Methamphetamine.
As a result of the investigation, Jason Kelly Burns (33), a resident of Mountain View County, Alta., was charged with:
Assault;
Uttering threats (x2);
Unauthorized possession of firearm;
Possession of controlled substance; and
Possession of controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking.
Burns was brought before a justice of the peace and remanded into custody. He is to appear before the Alberta Court of Justice in Didsbury on Sept. 29, 2025.
UPDATE: 9;27am. - Sundre, Alta. – Sundre RCMP is advising that the shelter in place is over. RCMP has the suspect in custody.

Sundre RCMP is issuing a shelter in place for the town. There is a report of a male with a firearm wandering around the community. Please stay in your residences and do not open the door for anyone. Please refrain from posting photos of responding officers on social media.
Schools are on lockdown and buses are not operating (stopped in a safe place and will not be picking up anyone else right now). DO NOT attend the school.
Information is scarce right now – RCMP are doing this as a precaution. An update will be sent when more info becomes available.
