A seniors' centre in Torrington was heavily damaged by fire Wednesday, prompting a large emergency response and forcing the closure of a nearby playground.
Kneehill County stated in a social media update that firefighters were called to a structure fire on Centre Street shortly before 12:45 p.m. on April 22. The fire involved the Silver Willow Senior Centre, a well-known gathering place in the community.
Emergency crews from Torrington, Trochu and Linden responded to the blaze. The scene remained active into the evening as firefighters worked to extinguish hot spots and secure the building.
No injuries were reported.
County officials advised residents to stay away from the area throughout the day to allow crews to work safely. The Torrington playground was also closed until further notice because of ongoing firefighting operations.
Kneehill County noted that Torrington's water supply remained safe to drink, although increased demand during firefighting efforts could cause temporary discolouration. Residents were encouraged to conserve water while crews remained on scene.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Kneehill County said further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
