Town of Stettler Signals Readiness for Future Data Centre Investment

Land Use Bylaw Amendments Position Community for Emerging Opportunities

January 22, 2026 – Stettler, Alta. The Town of Stettler is taking a proactive approach to economic development by positioning the community for future growth and innovation.

At its regular meeting on January 20, 2026, Town of Stettler Council approved amendments to the Land Use Bylaw to permit data centre developments within the town’s industrial areas. The changes are intended to prepare the municipality for emerging opportunities associated with data centre investment and to align with the Province of Alberta’s Artificial Intelligence Data Centres Strategy.

The amendments reflect Council’s development-focused approach and its commitment to ensuring Stettler is well positioned to respond as industries evolve and technology continues to advance.

Council has identified several potential benefits associated with future data centre development, including economic diversification, community growth, increased municipal tax revenue, and both short-term and longer-term employment opportunities during construction and operation.

“Council is committed to exploring a range of economic development opportunities that support long-term sustainability and growth in Stettler,” said Mayor Gord Lawlor. “This amendment sends a clear message that Stettler is prepared to work alongside the province and industry as new opportunities emerge, while strengthening our local economy for residents.”

The Town of Stettler will continue to work collaboratively with provincial partners, industry stakeholders, and the development community to explore opportunities that align with Council’s strategic priorities and the community’s long-term vision.

Council remains committed to responsible, forward-looking economic development that benefits residents, businesses, and the broader region.
