Vermilion RCMP responds to vandalism of Courthouse and Sheriff Vehicles

On July 6, 2025, RCMP received a complaint regarding damage done to the Vermilion Provincial Building as well as 6 Sheriff vehicles that were parked on site. RCMP members arrived on scene and noted that a significant number of windows were smashed on and in the Vermilion Courthouse, Public Health windows as well as the Sheriff’s vehicles. Additionally, the suspect had caused additional damage to the Children’s Rehab Service interior and exterior had extensive damage. Vermilion RCMP, with the assistance of Kitscoty RCMP and Alberta RCMP Police Dog Services (PDS), we able to identify, locate and arrest the suspect. It was later discovered that the suspect had also caused damage to the McDonald’s in Vermilion. The initial estimate of the damages done to the Courthouse and vehicles is set at upwards of 1 million dollars while the damage to McDonalds is estimated at around $50000.
As a result of the investigation, Steven Bodurka (23), a resident of Vermilion, was charged with:
Mischief to vehicle over $5000 (x6);
Mischief over $5000 (x2); and
Break and enter to commit mischief over $5000.
Bodurka was brought before a justice of the peace and remanded into Custody. He is to appear before the Alberta Court of Justice in Vermilion on July 8, 2025.
“I wanted to start by sending a special thank you to the two youths who reported the incident and stayed on scene in order to give their witness statement” said Cpl Brittany Pegg of the Vermilion RCMP. “This perfectly highlights how community vigilance, combined with the efficiency of your Vermilion RCMP, effective partnerships and assistance from other RCMP detachments and specialized units, can allow us to keep Vermilion safe, together.”
