Bashaw town council reviewed its proclamations and letters of support policy during its regular meeting Feb. 4. Council emphasized that while the municipality does not routinely provide cash donations, it already contributes to community initiatives in non-monetary ways.
Council noted that municipal support often comes through in-kind services such as public works staff setting up barricades, installing flags and assisting with logistics for local events. Members said this type of support allows the town to contribute while maintaining consistency and fairness for taxpayers.
The discussion arose amid broader consideration of how Bashaw responds to requests for recognition, proclamations and support. Council expressed concern that adding a general donation line item to the municipal budget without clear parameters could be problematic, particularly given that not all taxpayers support higher taxes to fund discretionary requests.
Coun. Reina Masyk suggested caution, noting, “Money is tight for everyone right now.”
Council also pointed to the role of local businesses, saying private-sector contributions are an important part of community support and often complement municipal involvement.
During the meeting, council acknowledged the level of civic engagement in the community, noting that residents regularly advocate and participate at provincial and national levels. Members said the town frequently delivers results beyond what might be expected for a municipality of its size, describing Bashaw as a community that “punches above its weight” and merits recognition for that effort.
The town’s policy sets out criteria for proclamations and letters of support, including limits on financial commitments and restrictions on political or commercial activity, with council retaining final authority over approvals.
