Campground evacuated after tornado touchdown

A tornado touched down at the Dillberry Lake Provincial Campground on the evening of July 8, prompting a large emergency response and the evacuation of the campground.


Wainwright RCMP, assisted by surrounding detachments and emergency services, responded to the incident near Dillberry Lake, Alta., after reports of the tornado touchdown.


Emergency personnel evacuated the campground as a precaution while first responders assessed the area. RCMP later confirmed that everyone at the campground had been accounted for.


During the initial response, police asked anyone in the area to follow the directions of emergency workers to allow crews to safely manage the scene.


Wainwright RCMP and surrounding detachments remained on scene following the evacuation. No information on injuries or the extent of damage had been released at the time of the latest update.

Police said further information will be provided as it becomes available.
