Grain farmers brace for extended price slump

World News

North American grain growers face another stretch of difficult market conditions, according to analysts at Rabobank. A global surplus of major crops such as wheat, corn and soybeans has pushed prices toward the lower end of historical ranges. As a result, many producers are operating below the break-even point and could continue losses through at least 2027–28.

Rabobank’s grain-and-oilseed team notes that overproduction worldwide has created “monster supplies,” limiting hopes for a significant rebound in prices. The current pricing plateau — with corn historically fluctuating between US$3 and US$7 per bushel — appears to be holding firmly near its floor.

For producers on the Canadian Prairies, this downturn intersects with other serious pressures. In parts of Alberta, drought and erratic weather over recent years have reduced yields and forced farmers to shift some poor-quality grain into livestock feed under support measures introduced by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.

Compounding the problem, trade uncertainty and rising production costs threaten to squeeze incomes further. According to an analysis by Farm Credit Canada, potential tariffs and input-cost inflation could result in negative returns per acre for some western wheat and canola producers.

As producers navigate this volatile environment, many are cutting back on new equipment purchases, renegotiating land rents and scaling back input use — even as operating debt deepens.

For farmers across the Prairies, the outlook remains bleak: global oversupply, weak demand, and high costs suggest the sector may not recover profitability for at least another two seasons.
