Highway 2 reopens after fatal shooting near Leduc

LEDUC, Alta. — Highway 2 near Leduc has reopened following a police investigation into a fatal shooting Saturday afternoon.
In a media release, Leduc RCMP said the highway is once again open to traffic, but investigators are still asking witnesses to come forward as the suspect vehicle has not yet been identified.
Police say the incident occurred March 14 at about 2:50 p.m. on Highway 2 near Township Road 490.
According to RCMP, a witness saw a white or grey dirty pickup truck pull up beside what was later identified as a black 2012 Honda Civic. Moments later, the pickup sped away at a high rate of speed while the Honda pulled over to the side of the road.
Investigators later determined a weapon had been discharged toward the Honda Civic, killing the driver.
The Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit has taken carriage of the investigation.
Mounties are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or who has dash-cam footage from Highway 2 near Township Road 490 around the time of the shooting to contact Leduc RCMP at 780-980-7267.

Earlier Saturday, RCMP closed Highway 2 between Leduc and Township Road 490 while officers investigated the scene and asked motorists to avoid the area.
