Lacombe County stays with economic development strategy

Lacombe County council provided some small tweaks to its current economic development strategy, but mainly decided to stay the course. The discussion was held at the Mar. 12 regular meeting of council.

The Lacombe County economic development strategy update was provided by Economic Development Officer Kerrie Taylor, who, it was noted, is apparently leaving the organization soon. “Lacombe County’s ‘Success Grows Here!’ economic development strategy was approved by council in Apr. 2023,” stated Taylor’s report to council. “The strategy established a long-term framework to guide business retention and expansion, investment readiness, regional collaboration and economic diversification within the county.” She observed that county staff use this document as their guide.

It was noted some initiatives have been completed (personal contact with every business owner within Lacombe County), while some have become annual activities (business spotlights).

Additionally, Taylor stated progress has been made on projects such as the Lacombe County data hub and business retention/expansion.

Reeve John Ireland asked if a proposed economic development committee has been struck, to which Taylor responded no, as the creation of such a committee has to be presented to council first, along with some groundwork such as developing terms of reference.

During discussion, councillors were given an opportunity to comment on the existing strategy and make suggestions.

Coun. Dana Kreil noted that the Government of Alberta has mentioned nuclear power in Alberta and suggested that nuclear power be added to the strategy.

As councillors discussed the reams of data in the update, it was noted Lacombe County doesn’t appear to be getting any younger. It was also noted there are almost 300 businesses in the municipality. Taylor stated she met with virtually all of them during her time at Lacombe County.

Taylor stated that maintaining relationships is very important to encouraging economic development, pointing out that it’s important that the business community knows Lacombe County’s doors are open to them. She cited as an example a business dealing with a lot of red tape but knowing the municipality is approachable about such things.

Taylor also pointed out strong communication can help the public better understand how and why development occurs and the difference between large and small businesses.

During discussion, councillors asked if Taylor heard a lot of feedback from the business community about tax rates; Taylor responded that, typically, the subject wasn’t really mentioned.

Several councillors mentioned their strong satisfaction with Taylor’s work at Lacombe County and hoped her replacement would maintain current projects.

Councillors unanimously approved the current economic development strategy with the addition of nuclear power.
