One recall petition targeting a member of the Alberta legislature has been withdrawn, while six others have failed after falling short of the required number of signatures, according to Elections Alberta.
Chief Electoral Officer Gordon McClure said in a Mar. 13 statement that the agency received notice of withdrawal for a recall petition targeting Amanda Chapman in the electoral division of Calgary-Beddington.
Under the Recall Act, recall petitions must gather signatures equal to 60 per cent of the votes cast in the riding during the most recent provincial election.
Six other petitions reached the end of their signature-gathering periods and were submitted to Elections Alberta. After completing the preliminary verification stage, the agency determined none had gathered enough signatures to meet the required threshold.
Member and Electoral Division | Votes Cast in 2023 Election | Signatures Required (60%) | Preliminary Signatures Counted | Result |
Peter Singh – Calgary-East | 14,322 | 8,593 | 556 | Unsuccessful |
Tanya Fir – Calgary-Peigan | 21,751 | 13,051 | 2,093 | Unsuccessful |
Rebecca Schulz – Calgary-Shaw | 25,000 | 15,000 | 211 | Unsuccessful |
Danielle Smith – Brooks-Medicine Hat | 20,117 | 12,070 | 2,317 | Unsuccessful |
Adriana LaGrange – Red Deer-North | 18,624 | 11,174 | 2,415 | Unsuccessful |
Nate Glubish – Strathcona-Sherwood Park | 26,284 | 15,770 | 1,326 | Unsuccessful |
Elections Alberta stated the verification process ended once the preliminary counts confirmed the petitions could not reach the required number of signatures.
As required under the Recall Act, written notice of the withdrawal and petition results has been sent to the applicants, the affected MLAs, the leaders of their registered political parties, and the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly.
