Second arrest in QE II homicide

Alberta News

Alberta RCMP have charged a second person in connection with a fatal shooting on Highway 2 near Leduc that left a 22-year-old man dead and prompted a multi-week major crimes investigation.

Police say Birinder Singh was killed March 14 after gunfire was directed at his vehicle on the QE II near Township Road 490 at about 2:50 p.m. Investigators determined Singh was driving a black 2012 Honda Civic when a white or grey pickup truck pulled alongside. The truck fled at a high rate of speed moments after the shooting while Singh’s vehicle came to a stop on the roadside.

The highway was closed for several hours as RCMP began their investigation before reopening later that day. The Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit took over the case and appealed to the public for dashcam footage and witness information from the area at the time of the shooting.

On March 19, investigators confirmed they had recovered a grey 2022 Ford F-150 believed to be connected to the homicide but continued to seek additional information from the public.

RCMP announced March 24 that 18-year-old Jimmy Gassner of Lloydminster had been arrested in Canoe Lake, Sask., on March 21 and charged with second-degree murder. He was remanded into custody and was to be transported to Alberta for court proceedings.

Police said at the time that many questions remained about the circumstances and motive and that details would be limited as the investigation continued.

In an update released April 1, RCMP said a second suspect had been taken into custody. Deon Libsekal, 23, was arrested March 26 in Edmonton and is charged with second-degree murder and accessory after the fact.

Libsekal has been remanded in custody following a judicial hearing and was scheduled to appear in Alberta Court of Justice in Leduc on April 2.

Staff Sgt. John Brown of the RCMP Major Crimes Unit said tips from the public played a key role in advancing the investigation and credited officers from multiple detachments for their work on the case, describing the killing as a senseless tragedy.

RCMP say the investigation remains ongoing and additional updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
