A 27-year-old Red Deer man faces multiple charges after a stolen truck collided with an SUV in the city’s downtown, sending one person to hospital and causing significant property damage.
On Feb. 14, 2026, at 6:13 a.m., Red Deer RCMP responded to a glass break alarm at a business on Gaetz Avenue. Officers determined the alarm had been triggered by debris from a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of 50th Street and Gaetz Avenue.
Police say a black truck struck a white SUV before mounting the sidewalk, damaging a downtown building and property belonging to the City of Red Deer. Several lamp posts, garbage cans and a fire hydrant were also damaged.
The driver of the SUV was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. No other injuries were reported.
The driver of the truck fled the scene on foot. Investigators later determined the truck had been stolen in Red Deer and had fled from Blackfalds RCMP earlier that day. Police identified the suspect as someone well known to them.
On Feb. 22, members of the Red Deer RCMP Crime Reduction Team located and arrested Nathaniel Tardif, 27, without incident.
Tardif is charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm, failing to stop after an accident, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, flight from a peace officer and operating a motor vehicle while prohibited.
He was held for a judicial interim release hearing and remanded in custody. He is scheduled to appear Feb. 24, 2026, in the Alberta Court of Justice in Red Deer.
Police had earlier advised motorists to avoid the area due to significant delays but later confirmed normal traffic flow had resumed.
Anyone with information about criminal activity in Red Deer is asked to contact Red Deer RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
