The Halkirk and District Senior Centre has a new roof, replacing one that had seen its share of leaks over the years. Water had begun seeping into the building, damaging the second-floor lath and plaster. Temporary patches were applied, but contractors warned further leaks were likely.
The Centre secured funding through several grant applications, receiving support from Capital Power, Paintearth 100 Women Who Care, the Paintearth Wind Project (Potentia), and Waste Connections of Canada/Paintearth Regional Waste Management. The County of Paintearth oversaw the contractor and completed the project. The Senior Centre extends its sincere thanks to all the organizations and donors who made the new roof possible. Their support has ensured the building will continue to serve the community for years to come.
The building, originally constructed by the Royal Bank in 1921, operated as a bank until 1976. The village of Halkirk purchased it for $1, with the condition it no longer serve as a bank. Local residents transformed it into a recreation and meeting space for seniors in 1980, adding a floor curling area in 1985.
Today, the Centre hosts floor curling, bingo, card games, meetings, and small community events. FCSS programs, including workshops and craft days, are held there regularly. The facility continues to serve Halkirk’s 40-plus population, welcoming new members and remaining a cornerstone of the community.
