Nate Horner to step down in 2027

Letters To The Editor

LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY

ALBERTA

Nate Horner, MLA

Drumheller-Stettler Constituency

May 20, 2026

Tomorrow Premier Smith will be unveiling and swearing in her new Cabinet. It has been an honour to serve as a member of cabinet, first under Premier Kenney, and then being given the responsibility to be Alberta’s Minister of Finance and President of Treasury Board by Premier Smith after our 2023 election win.

When the Premier offered me this cabinet role, I told her it was likely that my second term would be my last. As we have passed the halfway point of this term I have had many conversations about the future. I have decided that the original plan is still the best fit for me and my family and that I will not be seeking re-election after this term.

I remain supportive of our United Conservative Party and Premier Smith. In discussing my plans with the Premier we both felt it was important for the election year budget to be built by a member of cabinet who will be running for re-election, and therefore I will not continue in my role as Minister of Finance and President of Treasury Board. I thank the staff in my ministry office and department for all their hard work and wish the team all the best as they move forward and begin preparations for Budget 2027.

I will continue to serve as the MLA for the great people of the constituency of Drumheller-Stettler until the next general election in October 2027.

Sincerely,

Nate Horner

Drumheller Constituency
